I beg to differ. Ms. Baez has the voice of an angel. Donna is a very accomplished vocalist...most of the time. And Yoko, I guess we agree on that one.

JB may have the voice of an angel but she was a stage hog of epic proportions. I saw her at Bread and Roses one year with the Heart sisters, it was almost like she was in competition with them. Who could belt it out the loudest - JB wins that battle every time. She doesn't sing with others she sings over other people. Can I drown out the other singers on stage? Then I win!
I saw her do her solo thing a few times and it was good, no one to compete with.
With the GD they were laughing behind her back while on stage. It was quite painful to see in '81. Right at midnight on NYE someone (JB) is wailing on an atonal kazoo...we were right at the stage and we were laughing our asses off. Watching Jerry all tripped out giving Joan the stink eye is a pretty clear memory from that show.

I certainly see your point of view, and I even agree...in certain circumstances. Primarily in the Wall of Sound years, for reasons that have been discussed, Donna blew (easy...). Once the sound system created better on stage acoustics for her sensitive ears, she was great post-74. Baez? Kind of the female Dylan to my ears. Very distinctive style that makes her a true original. Too bad I don't like it. To each his own.

"To each his own" Absolutely. I have often caught flak for saying Joplin was better than Grace. It seems some found Janis' vocal stylings to be somewhat abrasive and Ms. Slick's warbling tremolo soothing

I think Donna's voice couldn't handle volume very well and she was forced to sing in keys that weren't in her wheelhouse to accommodate Jerry and Bob. Big imho.

I worked with a lady who played that song on repeat repeat repeat...now it just causes my temples to pulsate and my stomach to turn. Kind of like drinking tequila does now, after a couple of over indulgences.

Ha--fair point; I had just rec'd it and all I could conclude was she defn has a good voice, period (as opposed to those described above folks were debating).
It came about via a discussion on Zulu folk music (I had no idea about the origin of the Token's hit).

JB having the voice of an angle is a little over the top. She had a set of pipes no question but all that warbling on folk tunes from other centuries, early on- more grating than anything Donna ever did imo.
Yoko was an avante garde artist given a very wide berth by John given some of his musical pursuits post-Beatles. (Have you heard her contributions to the tunes John and Chuck Berry did on the Mike Douglas show in early '72? Wow.)
Point is, for some context here, Phil's vocals sucked and he's never suffered this kind of scrutiny. If there's any Dead live recordings where his voice can get separated out (ala the Linda McCartney public hanging mc'd by Howard Stern 30 years ago), on perhaps a '72 Attics, or Brokedown Palace, we could all have that same fun again.
